HOUSTON--- Guard Mariah Mitchell became the University of Houston Women's Basketball program's first signee under new head coach Ronald Hughey, as she signed a financial aid agreement with the school Tuesday afternoon.

Mitchell, who stands at 5-foot-9, joins the Cougars after playing four years of varsity basketball and earning all-district honors on three separate occasions at McKinney High School in McKinney, Texas.

"Mariah is going to be a culture changing kid, no doubt about it," Hughey said. "She's a kid who has great work ethic on and off the court. Her attitude is fantastic and she comes from a great family. She's a natural born leader and has a relentless attitude for winning. We're excited to have her here at Houston."

The Mckinney, Texas native has been a star right from the very beginning, making McKinney High School's varsity squad as a freshman and playing in 31 contests that season. She helped lead the Lions to the regional quarterfinals, while earning second-team all-district honors that year.

Mitchell averaged 19.4 points and 6.3 points per game through her freshman and sophomore seasons, putting her on the map as a top-100 recruit within in the state of Texas according to MaxPreps.com

As Mitchell became an upperclassman, the accolades continued to pour in, as she collected all-state honors, while picking up District 10-5A's Offensive MVP award. She also led the Lions to postseason play as the smallest 5A school in the state of Texas.

Mitchell peaked her senior season, winning the district's MVP award, while qualifying for her second consecutive all-state team. She also was named MVP of the Showboat Classic All-Star Game, scoring 29 points in the contest. Mitchell also participated in the first annual Battle of the Gulf All-Star game.

In addition, Mitchell competed for one of the best AAU programs in the state of Texas, playing for Texas Elite.

Off the court, she maintained a 3.3 GPA while in high school and was a member of PALS, a tutoring group dedicated to helping elementary school kids become better students.

In her free time McKinney loves to shop and hang out with her family.

Mitchell is the first signee under Hughey, and joins Fatima Adams, Moesha Kinard, Dejah Joshua, and Sandra Davis as member of Houston's 2014-15 recruiting class.

From coach Hughey: "Mitchell brings a little bit of everything to the table. She's naturally athletic and strong. She's a high-energy player, both offensively and defensively. She'll crash the boards and try to get to the bucket any time she can when she has the ball. She also owns a deadly mid-range game, while her three-point shot is continuing to improve."
